On the occasion of Mississauga's 50th anniversary, the artist Saype has chosen Community Common Park, a place of gathering and exchange at the heart of the city, to create a monumental artwork.
The piece depicts a child playing with Kapla blocks, small wooden planks that have shaped the childhoods of many adults around the world, including Saype himself. Through his work, Saype seeks to emphasize the importance of coming together for a common goal, by acknowledging the amalgamated beginnings of Mississauga and celebrating its unique cultural make up.
In this artwork, the house of blocks symbolizes our planet: a fragile and expanding world, constantly evolving, and changing. Each wooden piece, carefully placed by the child represents the importance of every individual and every action in the building of a common future for Canada. The artwork stands in striking contrast to the modern skyscrapers surrounding the park, highlighting the simplicity of childhood and humanity at work amid the growing urban development of Mississauga.
For Saype, this creation embodies the cooperation and solidarity essential to constructing a community that is prosperous future for all. “Working together is key to building a sustainable and beneficial future for everyone,” says the artist. Through this piece, he invites us to reflect on how even the smallest contribution can help shape a better world.
